In today's economy, cost-savings tips and tricks can make a huge difference in your overall success at staying witin your budget. I've found that changing the way you think about family meals can make a big difference in helping you make better budget-friendly meal choices.
Let's start with... coupon clipping!
In each Sunday's newspaper (yes, the paper costs $1.75--I'll discuss that below), there are at least two sections of money savings coupons. These can be for free items (like a pet treat or package of gum), money off items you purchase (like 25-cents to $1 or $2 off), or buy-one, get-one-free offers. But here's the catch with these coupons: ONLY CLIP COUPONS for those items you NEED and actually USE. It won't save you money if you clip great savings coupons that entice you to buy items that will be a complete waste. If you're anxious to try some new product and there's a coupon for it, fine... but if it's something you never thought about purchasing, then don't even clip the coupon.
Okay, let's talk about the cost of the newspaper. Here in Nashville, it's $1.75. You can easily save that amount by clipping coupons for items on your grocery list, but if money is so tight that you can't afford the $1.75 (don't think I'm being ridiculous--I've BEEN THERE, folks!), then you have a couple of options. First, you can ask a newspaper purchaser if you might have the coupons they don't use. Most people don't use them at all, so you may well receive the entire handful. Or you can go by the newspaper printing company and ask for sets of the coupons from the Sunday edition. Most of the time, they're happy to give you these. Or, third, you can ask your newspaper vendor to save you coupons from unsold newspapers. They return the newspapers anyway, so they'll lose nothing by making that donation to your cause.
But this is NOT an option: do NOT under any circumstances REMOVE the coupons from a stack of yet-to-be-sold newspapers (No, not even if the newspaper vendor encourages you to do so.) Why?, you ask. Well, because that might be the newspaper I'll come in and purchase and you can bet I intend to offset the cost of the paper with the coupons I clip. In other words, you may rob someone else of their money savings coupons. So do NOT do this... it's tacky, trailer-trash behavior and your mama would be ashamed.
Next time, let's talk about how you can save money by joining your grocer's loyalty club.
